Should i tell my boss i have schizoaffective disorder?

I'm getting a lot of pressure lately specially in meetings.. Everybody catches me inattentive and that i gave weird answers to simple questions.


My boss is very polite when we talk in person but in his email, his remarks are apparently sharp.. like he will ask me some like...


"Do you not know how to do it?"

"How many times have i told you before?"

"I did not ask you to do that, did I?"

Would it make things better if i tell him about my mental condition? so far, i only had one episode of schizoaffective disorder and i have manage to live on my own without depending on medications.


By the way, I am a foreign worker in this country and I work as a software developer. I am the only programmer in the company so everybody depends on me.

This can be a very sensitive subject. Mental illness of any kind still sadly has a stigma attached to it and that means that eventually you have a pretty good chance of being discriminated against by people in society, and that can include your boss and co-workers. It usually is better to protect yourself. I think its great that you have gone so long without medication for your disorder, but if you know your diagnosis then you obviously had to have been seen by a psychiatrist or your family doctor to know this. And you also are intelligent enough to hold down a very good job but also know that you are at risk for having a relapse with your disorder at some point down the road and you must be concerned about your emotional stability. I would not tell your boss about your disorder for the time being, but perhaps maybe focus on getting more long-term treatment for your disorder, such as medication and counseling to prevent future episodes.

ABSOLUTELY YES, you should tell your boss, in a joint meeting with your Human Resources Director, that you have a schizoaffective disorder.

According to Labor Laws, employees cannot discriminate against employees for having a mental health handicap.
They have to provide you with reasonable accommodations for you to complete your job, as required by your job description.

Once you have your handicap documented, you will be fully protected and they cannot cause you to feel different because you have this disorder.

I wouldn't advise it, since there's hundreds of people who would like your job. People act weird and don't have any disorder at all, it's just their personality. If you have an episode, just say "I'm not feeling very well today", it's true and they don't need to know why. You don't want to give your employer a reason to get rid of you.

Your boss seems like a bumper sticker communicator. Those type of people are VERY HARD to get along with. I know I've worked for many.
