I just got a book on him today through Amazon.His story is kind of sad.
As for his music.I like "Almost Blue" but that is not exactly old.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4PKzz81m5c

Good choice . . . probably Herbie Mann is too mainstream but I liked him in the 60s.

Spaceways Incorporated
Roland Kirk
For stuff that's less 'out there'.... try: Thelonius Monk, Medeski Martin Wood, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Bud Powell, Clifford Brown, Horace Silver.
And if you want the best in Jazz guitar, go with Grant Green or Wes Montgomery.
