Rather than going for a complete surprise ( & risk disappointing ) why not ask him/her to compile a list of wants and defiantly don't wants.

Give them one of those Cash Cards where they can go to a number of stores and use the credit on the card. That way they can go buy what they really want. You decide how much you want to put on the card.

What hobbies are they into? What lifestyle do they lead? How can you blend the two?



I mean, if they're pretty nomadic, then a giant amp won't help, but an ipod might.



If they're a reader, they might like a nook or kindle, but alternatively they might be like many of us, and prefer the feel of a paperback.



What did you want as a teenager? How do they compare to where you were back then? What does the object you've come to equate to in today's world?

So get them something that speaks to you about them. A book you read that you think they'll enjoy, a bag that has a logo you've seen them wearing...

A notebook. Teenagers need somewhere to vent.

Something to show you're paying attention, and you care.
