One man's trash is another man's treasure... our trash is probably worth a lot on their home world and so they let us produce it... like we let bees make honey.

Can you imagine..., or would they just diminish it into a piece of tiny dust?

They might be looking for resources, that we just throw away, while they have developed the means to harvest massive amounts of energy from them! (or something like that)

It wouldn't. People are distrustful of outsiders and we'd find some way to offend them like nuking them or something.....which would explain why sighting are usually in rural area with less witnesses ;)

Getting close to a moot point just like Fermi said as Olber can't save SETI here but in the case you note the problem becomes the one faced by the canine so long ago. I like the Popol Vuh story that says when mankind was being separated from the rest of the world by a great chasm opening between animals and humans the Dog with its great empathy perceived the lonelyness humanity would bear from the rift and leaped across the gap at the last moment to stand with man
It sounds so sweet but I feel so bad for the poor Dog as its submission enslaves it at the same time and homo sapiens have a notable tendency toward a sometimes lemming-like need to follow something anyway
I can imagine a case where E.T. returns to a now grown Elliot bringing a cadre of such benevolent "assistance" along with their manual on how to serve mankind but then again Star Trek's "prime directive" is nastiness in sheeple's clothes also as Piper voiced through the Fuzzys so eloquently.

Didn't know this I just stumbled on...
During a book signing at Strand Book Store, Piper alleged that the Little Fuzzy series was inspired by an acquaintance named Kevin "Fuzzy" Sheffield. Piper and Sheffield first met while in a common literary club in central Oregon. They exchanged names and kept in loose contact for several years thereafter. When asked about Sheffield, Piper described him as "a bizarre character, capable of writing little more than a couple of vaguely-legible remarks in each letter. While I'm sure he's full of insight and great ideas, it seems impossible to effectively communicate with him on a conventional human level...terribly nice fellow however.
Must be in the water up here... I'll ask D.B. about it.

It would be nice if they showed us how to make cheap, clean energy... and it would be great if they educated superstitious people that hold humanity back.....

I guess we would have to know what they needed to thank them properly...
