Total number of Americans on welfare-4.3 million. How are we arriving at the idea that 1/2 in the US are freeloaders?

http://www.statisticbrain.com/welfare-statistics/

Add in social security/Medicare recipients? Nope. We earned those benefits
Foodstamps with 46.7 million recipients? It's not considered welfare. An examination of the roles reveals most recipients are working families. Not even everyone on welfare gets foodstamps (mentally ill, developmentally disabled, traumatic brain injured living in supported living environments)

Tell us, proponents of the idea that half of us are leaching off the govt., where are they??

Is This A Good Question? (4)

They're actually in Washington DC, working in politics, the military industrial complex, the oil industry and many other of the most lucrative businesses that also pay no income taxes.

Many in the middle class staunchly defend those power clusters. The MC serves as the buffer in the US between rich and poor, and we do a very good job of convincing the poor that they actually have a chance at the Ameican success story. What do we get for defending the upper class from the unwashed? Not much.

That is from corporate a-holes and the conservative media who echos their ideas. Who are the freeloaders? Big business and the rich who hide their money overseas to avoid paying taxes to defend this country, keep the schools open and pay fire fighters.

Not just welfare but the many government assistance programs; but just as few people abuse them some us them legitimately(and try their hardest to get out). I'm really not too sure what I would do if I was in control of it. Then what about corporate welfare?

Are you talking about that Romney thing? Because the way I remember it, he said 48% don't pay taxes.

If it really were 50% of people taking more out of the system than they put in... then that'd be quite remarkable, given the wealth disparity. I'd expect it to be something more like 80% (at least if you include the value of using public infrastructure and being defended by the Army etc).

No, not the Romney thing. On Facebook I keep seeing people claiming 50% of us freeloading off govt programs which is patently untrue. I have no problem with the working poor getting food stamps or paying no taxes. I worked as a volunteer in a church sponsored program for homeless where I met a young family where both people were working minimum wage jobs and they could not afford housing. I found that type of thing all too common. And I find the "let them eat cake" philosophy of many Americans as disgusting. 50% of us freeloading is nothing but a myth perpetuated for political reasons

There are actually a ton of people who fall under the category of making too much $$ to get help, but not enough to get by...even under the revised laws, these people still won't qualify for help (medicaid or nutrition assistance)

You are correct on that, but even they cannot be counted as one of the totally mythical 50% who are supposed to be leaching of the system.

no, they don't get benefits...they can't because they do not qualify...that number comes from people who never needed benefits

The idea comes from the other half that aren't able to get those "benefits", and a hatred of paying taxes, with the misconception that your tax dollars actually fund ANYTHING on the Federal level-- or ever did.

Even if living with parents, they are not getting welfare assistance and therefore are not counted on the mythical 1/2 of Americans are freeloaders group.
