Some people do care if the poor suffer, and they are willing to do something.
Other people do care if the poor suffer, and they want the government to do something.
Some people don't care if the poor suffer, and they don't care if the government does anything.
Finally there are some people who don't care if the poor suffer, because they believe that people have to be accountable for their own behavior, and rewarding them for bad behavior will only promote more bad behavior.

True, and I was one of them once. I actually felt the poor needed to be put on their place. And then I became the hated and scorned. I learned from my mistakes. Some aren't so lucky.

Yup. Some like to believe that they are where they are becuase they worked hard (and those awful poor folks refuse to) and that fate has no hand in it. But working with the people I work with, (in social services) I see how crappy of a hand some are dealt and what some people have to do just to function and survive. Those who hold contempt for all poor people usually don't truly get that.

Why would I care about lazy people who don't care about themselves? The tiny portion of the poor who are so through no fault of their own have my sympathy but thd vast bulk are poor because they don't work, don't care or expect others to help them. Screw them

some people think that poverty is G-d's punishment...they care if they suffer, but in an approving kind of way...they'd be disappointed if they weren't suffering

Of course - one doesn't have to try too hard to make a case that the callous greedy people in positions of power could care less. One only has to look at the Republicans in power in Washington.
