It can be, but doesn't have to be. Without the ability to see into the future, we must best we know how to do, and hope for the best. But we're going to make some mistakes, you can count on that.

I think the point of that saying is to illustrate the importance of remaining vigilant by constantly asking yourself if your actions still reflect your original intentions, and if those intentions are in fact good.

But in order to do that, all of us must occasionaly swallow our pride, admit that we have somehow failed, and choose to learn from our failures. Otherwise our failures simply accumulate until they become overwhelming.

I think it just means actions speak louder than words. Also, I don't think there's a road, if anything maybe an elevator or subway or escalator. Second, not sure, if there was a road, why asphalt or some other material wouldn't do the trick....not sure how ideas would work out for gravel.

True:

I think its especially true of politics.

Think of our current housing crash... a lot of it started out as a way to give housing to poor people... "bad credit loans" of course turned into something else and is what it is now....

I think our current war in Iraq is another example of such a debacle.

This is just one of those sayings that people think are so clever but actually mean nothing if you think about it. Are we supposed to never have good intentions?Should we intend to do evil? No, this is just an excuse for greedy, selfish people to continue in their self centered ways. The road to hell is paved with greed, ignorance, fear, evil, intolerance, hypocrisy, selfishness, stupidity, etc.By the way I don't think Hitler had good intentions.
