U.S. Citizens: Would you favor a Constitutional amendment - see details:

Q&A Home   >  Community   >  EP

There are 525 members of Congress, Each with a min. staff personal of at least 6 people, some as many as 24......Would you favor a Constitutional amendment that these people only serve 1 session a month (13 sessions Including State of Union Address)...and only paid for the days they work. ? (Each session is 5 days or they are paid for 1 week) ...I made a rough calculation....The above, + the Staff, + Use of all cafeteria workers, security people, etc....Comes out to about 16 million saved a month (including utilities, office accessories, etc.. AND gas for govt. vehicles alone is another 3 million a year)

Is This A Good Question? (8)

Term limits, 2 terms, would be appropriate. But let them decide on their own staff.

@ Dan - but that doesn't address the question - If "TOM" serves for 2 terms, then BOB serves for the other two - We're still pouring money out there.......The same way - Just a different name on the check.

Why not just take them all down to only two staff members. Let them do the work they are paid for. I think Congress and the Senate need to be paid by the Hours they work, in DC doing what they are elected to do. Not while on vacation or so called foreign tours for something. By the way let them pay for their on trips.

Actually those Foreign tours are Illegal and in breech of the Constitutions...I don't remember the Article off hand I'll get it for you but that role is clearly left up to the State Department...Yet they break it all the time........When Congressmen go abroad to broker a deal for jobs or ANYTHING - its in violation of I think Article II Of the Constitution - Could be wrong on that but its in there, I'll get it........

I don't think this rises to the level of "Constitutional Amendment".
otherwise its not a bad idea

@ 5th Well it would have to be because what an amendment does is change or modify what wording is already in there......So in order to change it to the above it will have to be done by Amendment....

You can go to the White House.gov page and start a petition and inform people to sign on. While there, take a look at some of those Executive Orders our Prez. has signed into law. These alone should scare the "H" out of All America!

@Man - Indeed "cuts" are part of the question but it was to show more of what are we NOT getting in-terms of Value..Many can justify this amount of money IF we get value for it.....But we're not.......Look at the State of TEXAS, they run pretty efficiently and their congress is only in Session 4x a year.......They do what they have to do then go home and are paid only for the time they are there...Which frankly, is NOT making stupid laws........

The real problem is that they are the ones who set their own pay scale. They get to raise their own salaries without any way for us (the people) to stop it. I think the pay of all government employees be cut. Plus no pay till the budget is balanced.

1Sabre - They do not set their own pay scale......However since 2005 they get Automatic Raises unless its voted down for that year - I'd advise you to look it up.........But that is NOT the problem anyway........The Problem is what are we getting for our taxes, what VALUE.......Fact is I find this amount of money not to be a great deal.....its not a cost savings question - Its a question of "VALUE"........We spend more building one Naval Carrier but I agree with it because we're getting something for our money - I can't say the same for congress.......Those numbers were posted as a VALUE question, so not much as a cost savings one.

I saw the details. That would be a start... Term limits need
to be set, just like the President. Then we could tweek those
because certain individuals would jump from Senate to House
to Appointment in a Cabinet position to President to Judge etc.
And it would be sanctioned by the respective parties.

@ Walternc - OK let me set a few things straight with your post...Some of it is not accurate...Members can't "jump" from House to Senate - They have to be elected if they choose to run for that seat...."Appointments" within the Congress are done by Governors...So if you are a U.S. Senator from NY and die in Office...Its the Gov. of NYS to appoint a replacement with in 90 days then a Special Election is held...For that seat...it could be for the person appointed already or who ever the voters vote in..............TERM LIMITS......Doesn't really solve the problem of the question........One guy can do as bad of a job for tow terms as the next........and it wasn't to show a cost savings - it was to show VALUE....What VALUE are we getting for out money - I posted the dollar amount only as a VALUE statement - Not a cost savings one.....We spend more on a battleship than what I posted but at least we get something for that money - Here the question is posed in that light - WHAT ARE WE GETTING for that money?........Frankly, not much and thus if we're not - Then we need to reduce their damage and limit their wastefulness....That's how I was posing the question.....Lastly - Cabinet Appointments currently on OBAMA's Staff only one (CLINTON) was a former congressmen..........(might be one more) ,,,,,AND The SENATE CONFIRMS any appointments by the President - But as we have seen, Obama is in Violation of this.....He's made appointments while the Senate was in recess.........He's committed many violations

If what you wanted came true at what point would they just not ask for more money for doing the job? Its not like anyone can be penalized for this. Plus based off of old greek and roman traditions these jobs were paid so that everyone can participate in politics, not just the wealthy. So if we reduced the pay too low or had very few days to do things then they may be putting in input where their nose doesn't belong and there may not be the incentive for the right people to do the right thing.

@ Gamer - OK, First things first - They don't ASK for money money, it has to be by vote - You have the option to pick up the phone and express to them (your Senator and REP) anytime you want want and let them know how you want them to vote - (2) In 2005 a Permanent Raise was put in place....Congress Automatically gets one each year unless voted down for that year......(3)......We don't REDUCE their pay.......But we eliminate the Automatic insincere.....(4)........With limited TIME they focus on the REALLY important things we put them there for....Some also have spoke of TERM LIMITS and Cost Savings........The Problem is what are we getting for our taxes, what VALUE.......Fact is I find this amount of money not to be a great deal.....its not a cost savings question - Its a question of "VALUE"........We spend more building one Naval Carrier but I agree with it because we're getting something for our money - I can't say the same for congress.......Those numbers were posted as a VALUE question, so not much as a cost savings one.

There is a term limit our entire government is overthrown every two four and six years. So the fact they get a raise each year means nothing to me in fact they don't get to keep their job. (most of them). Our government runs by popular vote as well so if they do stay then they did something right. Its better to change gradually even though the minority may be failed the majority can prosper. It also goes to note life isn't fair, they get this advantage for being better than the other politicians and can be rewarded thusly.

There are individuals who earn more than that in interest payments alone on their fortunes. The sums you are talking about are minute in the grand scheme of things... however if Americans drove a car which was just one mile an hour more economical it would save the nation over 10 billion dollars a year.

This idea serves as two fold.....ONE - "What are we getting in RETURN" from their "Service".....ANSWER? - Not much.....The Numbers posted is not a debate so much about "Saving" as it is to show VALUE for what we're paying for as tax payers......I posted the numbers just as a point to make people "wonder" - We can't do anything about personal behavior like driving cars......That's their business........Paying taxes for something that returns little is EVERYONE'S business
