Resolved Question

Video games and kids?

I have three kids in the house and one video game machine that is in the main and only living area and on the weekends they are allowed to play. If allowed they will play from the time they wake to the time they so to sleep. How long should they play in one day, what is a reasonable time to let them start playing and what time should games be turned off for the day. Currently the kids can stay up until 1am playing video games only on the weekends and they wake up at 10 am and start playing video games. It drives me crazy to have it going on in my only living room all weekend. No games during the school week but I dread the weekend for my own sanity. What do you think?

I think as long as the kids are doing what is needed in school and not raising to much hell otherwise, why not? It is their free time too and parents complain when the kids stay out too much, if they stay in we complain, so let them be, one day they will get tired of playing so much, and move on to the next thing. Also, keep in mind when they will not be around playing anymore and all you will do is miss them in there playing around all day.

I think its ok for kids to play games.I will definantly let my kids play them as long as they have done their work.

My mom bought me a system which I had in my room.I could play it everyday but only after my work was done.I got straight A's and I played all the time.

I am sure its because they only get to play them on the weekends that they stay up so late.

I don't have kids, but I would say a couple of hours would be enough each weekend day. Get 'em outside to play! Ride bikes, go to the library or a museum, anything else but letting them veg in front of the TV. Maybe every now and then, have a video game "tournament" or something, but all day all weekend is just too much, in my humble opinion.

I'd bet most of the reason they play all day all weekend is because they don't get time during the week. And 3 kids to 1 system? You must have taught them some serious sharing skills, or you're ripping your hair out with all the screaming "MY TURN!!! MOMMM!!!!!"

Perhaps you need to instead ask yourself, what are they missing out on by playing video games all weekend? If they're resisting family time when you have arranged it, then there is a problem. But ultimately, they aren't going to shoot up their school from violent video games, or whatever else you are thinking is going to come of all this video game playing.

Hope I helped at least a little.

I understand and I have the same thing going on in my home. I used to get angry about it but I tried to look at it in a different way. My grandson is on that thing all day long and he cant wait to get home from school to be on it again. He wont go out. He stays in all week end and he plays and plays. I get so angry I start to yell but it does no good. Now I let it go. Why? Hes home, hes not out getting into trouble, its a adolesant thing and believe it our not it will pass like anything else. Its a phase they go through but you have to try and endure it. We cant see it through their eyes because we are not children anymore but try to remember when you were. You probably did the same thing and someone tried to tell you not to do it also but you didnt listen either. We forget to easily what it was once to be a kid.

i think they will be fine. When i was younger i used to play games for 6 hours a day even more on weekends. I still had good results, my behaviour was'nt affected. I don't play games anymore now that im older, i think your kids will get tired of it eventually.

all my dad & 3 younger bros care bout is video or computer games. so my dad has a computer while my 6 and 8 yr old bros fight over the other computer. and my third 10 yr old brother gets the video games. so all day all you can hear is gunshots and yelling and screaming. and the same sounds keep you awake at night. i dont actually mind as much, but i still wish my little brothers would stop staring at the screen every once and a while and actually go do something ACTIVE. itd be good for them...but whatever. all in all i agree with what Mandy5367 said.

You know, I have known an 11 -year boy in Israel. His English is very well. He said to me that he is the best pupil in his class and in English class. He has learned English by himself from games, videos...He is very good at playing game. He defeated many people who are older than he a lot. I was too. My friends was too. I used to think that kid and playing game are a bad combination. But you see it is not bad always if we know how to arrange everything. You can make some regulation to limit the time they play game.
