More than likely most of the phone lines have been burned down and those that are remaining are tied up. Be patient, Dear. Everything is probably okay. But I know your fear. I've gone through it before with tornadoes and hurricanes.
Take a breath, chances are phone lines are tied up like crazy because EVERYONE is trying to get a hold of loved ones in the area. It happens with every natural disaster that happens now-a-days.
Oh I'm glad this is an old question - I was wondering!
It is quite likely that communications are disrupted in the area. I've been through a hurricane before, and there were lots of trees fallen across roads, power lines disrupted, and difficulty finding people. But everyone was ok although it was hard to contact them at first.
