    Gender roles are bullshit.

Not for most people. What is BS is the overwhelming reinforcement of those norms. That tends to be downright cruel.

No, it was more miserable for people who didn't like the roles that were forced on them.

No, not for everyone. My mother, my aunt, my grandmothers, and my great-grandmothers were constantly pushing up against limited and limiting, expectations. Most people are probably fine with the expectations of the time and place in which they live. I am lucky that none of my progenitettes got angry and took an ax to the heads of the mentally encumbered who surrounded them. (I am also proud of the men they married, as well, especially my father and my mother's father.)

No idea. I'm not even sure they have changed. Men are still valued as utilities: providers and protectors; the only change is that we're less valued but we still have the same gender role. If a guy is in the army and being a human shield for society then he's awesome, as soon as he leaves the army he's worthless enough to be left to rot on the streets. So men are still getting the same ****** deal we always did.

Women still occupy a privileged position though; they can still dress how they like, they still have a guaranteed seat in the lifeboat, they still don't have to be anything other than women to be valued.

No, I think having the choice to be a stay at home mother or have a career makes life much easier. It is also easier because we don't have to worry about what people will think if we do something that doesn't fit the traditional roles. Men can make excellent nurses or stay at home parents and women do quite well in the business world. I wouldn't make a good stay at home parent I love getting up and going out into the world. If I was a stay at home mother I would still hate myself and participate in self destructive behavior. Traditionally women of middle class homes have been substance abusers because they are often unfulfilled.
