I believe that there are billions of years between Genesis 1:1 and 1;2. That's the only explanation I can fined. I think the young earth theory is pure superstition, and we can't deny the existence of Australopithecus, It is ridiculous to deny that homo sapiens have been around for at least 50,000 years possibly longer. I still reconcile this with my religion though.

Yes. Six literal long periods of time (definition #4 below).
The Hebrew word "yom" has 4 definitions:
1. Part of the daylight hours (hours long);
2. All of the daylight hours between sunrise and sunset (~12 hours, depending on where you are on Earth);
3.One rotation of the Earth (24 hours); or
4. A finite period of time (anything from 24 hours to billions of years).

When one looks at all 27 creation passages of the Bible, the only logical meaning for the Hebrew word "yom" must be #4.

Notice that Day 7 had no ending (...and there was evening and then morning...), meaning that we are currently living in the 7th Day (finite period of time that has lasted for ~10,000 to ~50,000 years).

Most who subscribe to 6 x 24 hour "days", don't cite passages beyond Genesis 1, 2 and Exodus 20 (Ten Commandments - Sabbath day).
However there are 2 dozen other passages that give an enormous amount of biblical evidence that God did it over billions of years, such as: Job 37-39, Psalm 19 & 104. For more passages, just visit www.reasons.org
NB: The original language of the OT was Hebrew, not English, and the NT was Greek.

Nope. All the evidence indicates a much longer process over billions of years. It's the difference between what science has found and what a pair of goatherds concluded around a campfire 4000 years ago.
