What advice do you wish your mother had given you?

I know I wish my mum had told me that being is love is not a good enough reason to get married! Marrying someone who is incompatible makes marriage so much harder! Sure we made it work but the first decade was rough. What life lessons have you learnt that you wish someone had told you about first so you didn't have to learn it the hard way?

"I am your mother, but I am human first and foremost, and you must not take my word for it over everyone else's."

I wish my mother had told me that I shouldn't quit high school in 10th grade instead of helping me around the laws that required I be a student until I was 17.

I wish my mother told me that living with a boyfriend at 16 years old was a BAD idea (instead of inviting him to stay)

I wish my mother hadn't allowed me to date a 21 year old when I was 15, she should have told me the reasons it was a bad idea.

I wish my mother had treated me like her daughter instead of her friend when I was a teenager, I think my life would have been much easier as an adult.

I wish my mother would have advised me against marrying an alcoholic as she spent many miserable years married to my father herself and knew what it could be like.

OK - I think that's enough.

Be honest with yourself (and others) about what you want from life even if it is a bit unusual. Have the courage to follow your own heart and not simply do what you think others want you to do. Because you can't get back the time that you waste if you try to follow someone elses dream and failing to be true to your inner desires will never lead to true happiness.

Financial advice.
I was never taught anything about money. I was never taught to save it. Or how to spend it wisely. I was never shown how to write checks, or use a credit card. I was always bought anything I needed, no questions asked, and now on my own its so hard to save.

I wish she would have shown me, and advised me to save more.

dont have high or unrealistic expectations of your husband; it's a recipe for dissappointment. I was unhappy for a few years because i had this sugar-coated, rose-tinted idea of what it is to be married. My husband simply couldn't live up to the fantasy of 'hi, honey, im home' and romance and flowers and candlelit meals. That's not the reality & it's not acheivable. Marriage - a real marriage takes work & it's not all hearts and flowers all the time. If you go in with that attitiude, you can weather far more storms together than you can with the belief that it's all gonna be chocolates and breakfast in bed. That's not to say romance is bad - just dont base all your hopes and dreams on a storybook version of life, as REAL life tends to be far uglier & unless you accept that, you're in for sore dissappointment. Personally, i think is one of the main reason for the high divorce rates in our countries - people expect so much from love, expect it to be like Hollywood, but love can be a very ugly thing too - you need to take the rough with the smooth. Besides, if every day were a sunny day, then what exactly would a sunny day be? Just another day, that's what! It's the bitter things in life that make the rest taste so sweet!

I am very lucky to have a mother that always listens and always gives good advice. One of the main things she always told me though was "Always have your own mind, think for yourself and do what YOU feel is right"

I think that sort of renders my answer obsolete.

Have your children in your mid 20's or late 20's. Definitely mid 20's if your husband is 6 years older. You and your husband should have all your children by your 35th birthday.
You do not want to be OLD parents. And kids do not need a big house, a nice car, private school. Really you can have a kid in a nice apartment complex and they can wear used clothes its far better for them to have younger parents and you will love your kids so much you will enjoy being able to see them into adulthood and being able to play w/ your grandkids.
