if i was a single father, i'd need to find her a good teacher, teach her the difference between the different looks, and how to do it right...let her play with it starting young, weekends and special occasions around 12-13 if that's what her peer group is doing, but wait until she is almost out of high school before i let her do it every day.
i think kids should look like kids. if they want to look mature, there are better ways to do it...wardrobe, hair, comportment

When my daughter's in junior high I'll let her begin wearing some, within limits....when it comes to things like that we usually use more of a case by case method than having rules set in stone, for instance at home or on a family outing I might let her experiment with a look that I wouldn't approve in general but she could try out.
That's the idea anyway, an extension of what we do with nail polish right now. She's allowed to use light colors any time but more dramatic shades only once in awhile to see how they look.

My parents let me start learning how to properly use makeup since I was a little girl but I only just started really wearing it when I turned 12.

I have always told my daughter that she is beautiful with out it and that the make up will only clog her pores causing her skin to trap the oils naturally there.

She started playing with it about age 14, but not really wearing any until special functions came about, like weddings, etc. Then at 16 she started with occaisional use for dating. But for the most part she prefers to be clean of it which makes me all the more happy.

Make up is a waste of money, time, effort, and if not applied right you start to hear that Circus tune playing in the back of your mind.

Sometimes at home I let my 4 year old put a little blush on when she plays dress up, but only in the house. She always asks me if I'll let her put on the same make up I wear, and I always tell her that 'all' is only for grown up ladies. Maybe I'll let her wear a little more of it at 15/16 years old. I don't wanna encourage drawing boys' attention too early!
I already have complete strangers ask me on the streets if they can take pictures of her...

Honestly, my daughter is a teenager now and never has gone through that phase of wanting to shock people or wanting to emulate the scumbags in music videos or Jersey Shore or any of that crap. I would like to think it's because she has parents that are attentive but not stifling. My theory is that a lot of the teens that are out of control are either looking for attention any way they can get it, or they're pushing back against being completely stifled.

If they're young; I'll make them play for fun. Not going out with makeup on though. Nail polish is fine at any age.
I would let wear my teenager when they are about 15 - 16 years old, and not too much.

Mine's 4 and she has a play with my lipglosses and stuff now and then for fun and I paint her toenails sometimes like for parties and stuff, she asks me to :-) I don't think I'll let her wear it regualrly until she's like 12-13 and then only a few bits. Young skin doesnt need caking in stuff and very young girls fully made up creeps me out
