i'd start with a good basic drawing book, learn perspective. very important whether you paint or draw. charcoal pencils and sketch books, I think i'd do pastels or even colored pencils just to get a working knowledge of the palette. I like Grumbacher water colors. MAKE darn sure you do not use cheap light weight water color paper, your stuff will look like muddy water.... if you are truly dedicated go with oils, they are difficult but the most beautiful of effects are acheived. Stay away from egg tempura, too hard. acrylics are like finger paints for adults, easy as all get out.

Colored pencils can be very challenging to be used in a realistic way. When I was in an art class the most challenging thing we did was a realistic still life of a bunch of bowls and cups, hammers, etc., we were supposed to do it very realistic, with shadows, shading, proportion, in black and white.
