It is difficult to answer your question, because it will be ba<x>sed upon upon your budget and individual taste, but I will give it a shot.
For Rum ignore Men's Journal recommendation of "One Barrel Rum" it has a heavy tobacco flavor.
I recommend the best bang for the buck: "Bacardi 8 Year". Rich and dark, without the harshly sweet aftertaste.
Some may prefer "Captain Morgan", but it is over rated in my opinion. Even though it is the Budweiser of rums: palatable but not delicious, affordable but intentionally not cheap, and studiously consistent in taste and composition. If you want to add this brand best bang for the buck is "Classic Captain Morgan".

For Vodka consider "Grey Goose" over "Absolute Vodka" and "Nuvo". "Grey Goose" is one of the smoothest, most mixable vodkas you can find. "Absolute Vodka" has a great ad campaign and numerous flavored vodka products, it is good vodka, but not great.

When we are talking whiskey, it is necessary to look at what we desire, because there are over 20 types of whiskey (American whiskey includes single malt, wheat, Rye, Corn, Kentucky bourbons, Tennessee whiskey, blended whiskey , and Scotch).
Most drinkers are going to prefer the sweeter Canadian Brands of blended whiskey ("Seagram's VO", "Crown Royal", and "Canadian Club").
For blended Scotch, consider "Chivas Regal", "Cutty Sharp", "J&B", and Johnnie Walker Red or Black".
Bourbons are strong whiskeys that can take your breath away when consumed straight; "Wild Turkey", "Jim Beam Black".
For a good sour mash Tennessee whiskey consider "Jack Daniels" a very popular whiskey in bars.
And any respectable bar will be stocked with "Disaronno Amaretto".

For Gin, consider "London Dry".
For Tequila, the only good choice in my opinion is "JOSE CUERVO GOLD". Mezcal is not a true Tequila, and purchase only if you want it for a conversation drink with the worm in it.
Please do not drink and drive.

I like sweet stuff, so here are some: Barenjaeger-honey liquer, Chambord-raspberry liquer, and love love love my own blueberry liquer made from Everclear with wild blueberries, crowberries, orange zest and sugar, and left to macerate for a few months, then strained.

You're a moonshiner?

Best Answer

No, this is just something I do with Everclear or vodka and fruit. I do this every year for my consumption and Christmas gifts. I don't make my own hard spirits, I just flavor and sweeten stuff I buy.

Sounds neat.
