What are some reasons a person would stay in an abusive relationship?

Now please don't use children as an escape goat to the Q.
My parents split when i was 5yo and I have never attempted suicide. So it's not THAT bad on children.

1) The person literally is screwed up and can't really make it on their own and they know it, 2) The person's self-esteem and confidence has eroded over time to where he or she no longer believes in his or her abilities or self-sustainability, 3) The abuse has created a feeling of psychological dependence, 4) The abuser controls the economics of the home and the abused has no resources put aside, 5) The setting is bad....it's easier to leave in you live in a familiar area or have family or old friends nearby and, especially, if you speak the local language well.

They are mentally abused as well, they believe that they cannot do better and that they have somehow done something that has prevoked the behavior. They may fear being on their own or the fall out of trying to end it.

Co-dependency! That applies to people who are needy of others, physically, emotionally, financially, etc.

1) The victim believes that if they stick out long enough their partner will change for good.
2) They have been in the abuse for so long they have lost touch of what a comfortable relationship will be like.
3) They don't have any self esteem (maybe because their partner constantly tells them that they are worthless)
4) They don't have financial stability
5)The victims a loner and can't take a stand by herself or does not have any close people to go to for comfort.

There should be no reason for staying in an abusive realtionship.
It depends from situation to situation.
If you are in an abusive realtionship it may have a negative effect on the children as well.
Maybe financial reasons, maybe hope, maybe false love, ... do not know. I do not have any experience in this subject.

One reason is that you dont have to take responsibility for anything that goes wrong there is a phycological cop out that you have the higher moral ground and that in iteslf can be a comfort

People stay for different reasons and much already detailed by Acta...because sometimes there's nowhere else to go; lack of/loss of confidence-- the abuse affects perceptions and many abusers work very hard to belittle the abused; fear, because the abuser threatens to track the abused down if they try to leave; because the abuser apologizes and promises again and again to change and sometimes love is shown, giving hope -- “intermittent reinforcement”, which is a trap...

financial stability maybe. Could also be that they have such low self esteem that they feel no one else would have them. They might maybe have no family nor friends thus feeling there is no one to turn to.

Some people fear being alone I think. They probably stay with an abusive person because they think it's better than having no person.
