What are your thoughts on elephant trekking? Do you think its cruel or view it the same as how we ride horses?

Me and my bf are going on a holiday to Krabi, Thailand and was thinking of trying on the elephant trekking. But now that I think of it again, its kind of cruel isnt it? Some people have said that the elephant are doing something they like which is walking through the jungle and not being made to beg on streets or something. And my bf said we have been using elephants as a mode of transportation. He is pretty ok with it I suppose. But both of us are concern on how the elephants are being treated.

I don't have a problem with this. It's the horrific poaching, and the torture these poor animals go through when poachers remove their tusks just to make a profit. They basically cut the animals face off, or part of it, and the elephant is awake (same for rhinos).
Really, this is nothing to worry about. I'm sure as long as the elephant has food and water, and is treated humanly with care and kindness, then enjoy it.

I agree that the welfare and treatment of the elephants is definitely a concern but if it is something that you are interested in then go for it. For years people were buying their dogs from 'puppy mills' only to find out the harsh treatment that those animals endured. I'm not saying what they are doing to the elephants is right and hopefully the treatment of the animals isn't the same in all these elephant trekking places but I have ridden on an elephant before fortunate for me it was a circus elephant and I know for a fact that they were not mistreated because I personally know the trainer.

It depends on how the animals are trained. Some elephants are beaten into submission or hobbled when they are very young. I assume it's common enough, but like anything else, I'm sure there are more humane practices. I would keep in mind that elephants that are mistreated have been known to go a little berserk in an expression of anger. As far as carrying people on their backs goes, I can imagine it is a very light burden to a grown elephant, as they are utilized to pull entire tree trunks over rough terrain. I don't like the idea of elephants as pack animals though, because I don't believe they have the minds for it. I think they are very intelligent, and they aren't as easily domesticated or brought into submission as a horse or even a camel might be. They are very very powerful when they get upset. That's just my personal feeling though. I haven't yet known an elephant personally.
