Resolved Question

What are your thoughts on gay marriage?

And Proposition 8, if you have thoughts on that too.

In case you don't know:
When gay marriage was made legal in California, a lot of people didn't like that, so this thing called Prop 8 came along to make gay marriage illegal (again) .. thus making about 18,000 new marriages invalid.

Anyway, there have been heaps of lawsuits filed against the Govt of California, challenging the proposition's validity, and a decision is going to be made within 90 days of the 5th of March on whether it will remain in place.

I'm not even American, but I'm so helplessly interested in these kinds of things.

I posted this in the I support Gay Marrriage group way back when:
I support that Gay Marriage should not only be legalized but encouraged....

Think of the boost to the economy.

Wedding planners, event halls, hotels, flower shops, dress makers/tuxedo shops, local governments etc....all would get a MAJOR boost of funds for all the weddings that would happen.

Then all the divorce lawyers would make a killing from all the "Oh **** we got married" couples that would also result in the laws being changed.

I think if GLAAD were to use the economic argument then they would get support from all the wedding industry-type of businesses.

Remember aim for the wallets...

I think any two adults lucky enough to find love and who have the desire to spend their lives together should have the right to be legally married regardless of their sexuality!

personally i'm against it but mainly because i think of marriage as an act of religion. i was not thrilled about getting married to my wife but she wanted the big church thing so we did it. most religions say that homosexuality is a sin. the whole sex is for procreation thing and to people of the same sex cannot procreate so it is a sin and thus cannot be permitted by the church (particularly the christian church). now i know folks will say "what about people who get married in a courtroom" i don't think of that as marriage. to me that is a civil contract as it has nothing whatsoever to do with any religion. i have no problem with gays having a civil contract or civil union and i do think they should be allowed all of the rights granted to people we call married couples as well. now my book is done and i'm sure many people hate me

OK I had to edit this when it was brought to my attention I misunderstood the wording in Prop 8. I am in favor of gay marriage.

LGBT community should have all the rights as every other citizen, including marriage.

The religious believers against gay marriage I've heard have said it's because 'marriage should be for a man and a woman to procreate.' There's plenty of gay couples that have more enduring, loving relationships than hetero couples.

If gay couples could marry legally everywhere, there would be more children able to be adopted into those loving homes. Ironically, many kids up for adoption are from broken hetero homes.

what is proposition 8? I haven't heard of that. And my thoughts on gay marriage:
I think that everyone should be entitled to marry who they love!

Go for it? sure, with all the bad in the world I say if you find someone great. But why make an issue about it? A union with two people is not about the state or who govorns you.

I think the government is completely overstepping the bounds of it's authority by continuing to deny marriage to same sex couples. My thoughts on marriage as a right of homosexual couples are irrelevant.

they should've just stuck with making it legal because they are going to fight for it until they get it and they deserve it. What is so wrong about marrying the person that you love? People may not like it but it's something that will always be around and something that everyone just have to adapt to and get used to.

I am Canadian so here in Canada it is legal for Gay Couples to get married which makes most Canadians very happy. (including me) Well we are the nation of peace so why not give some peace to our people too?
About prop 8 im a bit confused was it for or against gay marriage? But anyway i was disgusted when i heard that they made it illegal again in California for gay marriages! did you know that was the first time in american history where they TOOK AWAY human rights!!!
I am Catholic and I'm totally and completely for gay marriage, there is not one place in the bible where it says love is bad!!!
And for all those so called "Christians" out there who are against Homosexuality Jesus (Our Messiah) said nothing yes NOTHING against it he spoke of nothing against it!!!!! I bet you some of his Apostels (sorry for the spelling) were gay! Anyway the bible was translated from it's original texts by a bunch of weird old men who didn't like women indepence and homosexuality!
I mean if we are created in God's image doesn't that make God gay too?
Really guys homosexuality is so natural and not only a human thing! There are gay animals too like dolphins and wolves. If you've seen the show Eli Stone they had two gay chimps in it!
It is not a "choice" to be gay! people are either born that way or not! It is actually scientificly proven that you are born gay or not!!!!
As a Catholic who understands the church is really slow on the uptake (Took the church 400 years to accept the earth went around the sun and not the other way around) so i can still practice my faith but still have different opinions on some subjects.
the people most against it either have really low opinions of themselves or are gay themselves!
All these things i have listed are 100% true! Don't believe me look it up yourself!
I Believe in love! There is nothing WRONG or SINFUL about love!!!

To me, marriage is a legal / business contract, and only necessary if people are dishonest and unreasonable. But since relatively few people are TOTALLY honest with themselves and each other, I guess its a necessary precaution against rip-offs. ;-)

To me, if two people of the same or opposite gender love each other enough to live together and share "The Path of the Two", then that's good enough for me and has my blessing. Its up to them to get their agreements nutted out, and then keep to them.

No one can control who they love...any that do ,don't really love.
No one should have the right to tell another who they can marry and who they can't.

Rick,
as a gay/bi/str8 guy! I don't hate you at all. Marriage is silly at it's core but it's not up to you to decide if a church should or should not marry a woman and woman. It's up to the church and as far as I know the Anglicans (a very big church) say it's OK! I am a bi guy and I have had a 17 year marriage. My mom is a married lesbian (United Church - also a big one and not a weird one). I personally don't think marriage itself is a very good way to encourage people to be. It sets up unrealistic goals and draconian regulations of separations. I think the idea of civil unions might be good but one should remember that the fact it is labeled differently might mean subtle and disastrous differences between the rights of those with civil union and those with "marriage" contracts. Already we have "common-law" marriage which applies after a couple of years co-habitation. Now we would add a third concept. This seems like a beaurocratic dream and a nightmare for people figuring out the meaning of it all.

So go ahead and get married but don't expect it will make life easier. It might make things more fair though.

PS to the guy who argues that penises were designed for one purpose alone - we need to ask then why some of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom practice bi-sex all day long! Watch discovery channel! And one could argue that gayness helped military cultures to forge stronger troops for millenia. I studied art history - there is a huge body of evidence to suggest armies with gay troops had stronger bonds between the men and often those relationships caused them to fight harder for their comrades. In Greece and Rome the men could switch units to be with their lovers. So, one might also say there has been human and natural selection at work causing the survival of gay men over that of straight men. Maybe it isn't so by accident after all.

I think that if they are deeply in love and are commited to spending their lives togather, then who cares if they are gay or straight. Are those against it afraid the divorce rate will drop below 50% if gays are allowed to marry?

I support Gay marriage/civil unions. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to live together as they see fit in the world. I believe gay couples should be able to visit one another in the hospital and they should also receive the same benefits that married heterosexuals enjoy.
My gay friends have better relationships than most of my heterosexual friends!

I am glad you said what are your thoughts and not 'what is your opinion because this issue at it's core is not a matter of opinion. The concept of marriage isn't man made, it's a lifelong partnership between a man and a woman- it's inherent in the universe like 2 plus 2 equals 4 not 5. You can't decide all of the sudden to change the principals and concepts of mathematics can you? It sounds clicke in today's time, but it is just the basic definition of marriage. Of course in our world all kinds of partnerships exist that even attempt to mock what marriage is. You have economic arrangements, short until you don't want to be with me arrangements ect. but these are all twisted versions.

In one word: Great!!!

Let loved ones be with each other and let that partnering be acknowledged and receive all the accoutrements we give those devoted to each other. Great!!

I think that gays should have the right to some kind of legal union. Maybe we should not call it marriage, but they should have the right to be legally united in some way. They should be allowed to have their partner on their health insurance, etc. I ask any straight person, "At what point in life did you make the conscious decisions to be straight and not gay?" I never made a decisions like that. And if I were gay and did make that decision, why would I choose such a difficult life style? I think we are who we are and there's nothing we can do to change that.
