What are your thoughts on the use of depleted uranium rounds?

I've read the background radiation in parts of Baghdad are 1900 times higher than normal due to all the DU bullets US troops were popping off, the equivalent to receiving three chest xrays per hour.

The U.S. government denies that DU weapons can cause sickness. Go figure...

Depleted uranium is a byproduct of enriched uranium, the fissile material in nuclear weapons. It is pyrophoric, burning spontaneously on impact. That, along with its extreme density, makes depleted uranium munitions the Pentagon's ideal choice for penetrating an enemy's tank armor or reinforced bunkers.

When a DU shell hits its target, it burns, losing anywhere from 40 to 70 percent of its mass and dispersing a fine dust that can be carried long distances by winds or absorbed directly into the soil and groundwater.

Depleted uranium's radioactive and toxic residue has been linked to birth defects, cancers, from the War Syndrome, and environmental damage.

Its horrible, Im sometimes not proud to be an American.

I served in Iraq after the initial invasion, there was a long and complicated procedure for securing Iraqi tanks and vehicles that had been hit by DU rounds..

My understanding is that it's not a case of radioactivity it's the vapourised remains of the round and the metal that it's hit which is dangerous...

Most of them are still sitting around abandoned in Iraq so I can only imagine the future health effects for the Iraqis..
