My kids went to a school that required uniforms.. they went there for 10 years. They would complain every so often and would be thrilled on free dress days! Now they go to a school where they can wear whatever they want basically, expect for tshirts/hats that have extreme suggestive sayings on them. My youngest after a year of being able to wear whatever her heart desired, said she felt it was easier to wear a uniform because she didn't have to worry about what to wear, what is in and popular, who is wearing what. I really don't care either way if they wear uniforms or not. I can see benefits for wearing and not wearing. I guess I would say one of the biggest benefits of wearing one would be that everyone is wearing the same thing, so you can't tell who has more money- who can afford the expensive designer labels and who can't. They all look the same! Does it make a kid a better kid in the long run? Nah, I don't think so... who a kid is, is what's in their inside, how they act and treat others is not defined by what they are wearing on their bodies. It truly isn't. It's how you raise them.. how you teacher them to treat others, how respectful they are, how compassionate they are.... how their heart is....

My kids just recently started wearing uniforms in school. They thought it would curb violence and restore order and put a damper on the recognizable financial diversity.
The violence escalated because the gangs made it clear what colors were permitted and what weren't. The dropout and transfer rate increased as did the failure rate and all the wealthy kids shopped for their uniforms in elite Dallas malls.
Then they realized that it was the crappy system they were using and the bigoted, short sighted administration that had been hired to run the school since the uniforms were instituted. Before that all that was wrong was teaching to the taks test.

I think schools should spend more time on figuring out how to teach better before they worry about anything else.

I am against it. If kids are gonna bully because of what their peers wear, they will find something whether or not there is a uniform. I had to wear a uniform and got bullied for wearing my socks pulled up, my tie neatly, my skirt the right length and carrying my rucksack with both straps. Kids only misbehave on no-uniform days because it is something unusual and exciting. Kids learn respect and discipline because it is taught and earnt, not because they are forced to look like clones.

I think they are pathetic. Conformity has never been my bowl of Wheaties.

I had to wear them, it sucked. It's just the begging of the institionalism and conformity that the government and religions want to shove everyone in a box and keep people in line.

I'm against school uniforms as such. I think it's fine to have a dress code though. It allows the kids to make decisions, but still maintains standards.

I think it's pointless and tells the same concept "school kills creativity"

i went through middle school wearing a uniform and i honestly dont see the difference, being one of the only lower middle class kids at my school didnt change the fact i noticed people had more money than me it just comes down to the individual kid, if they let it get to them then yeah it helps but if the kid is strong willed it makes no difference.

Im for it. Discipline, order and uniform.

Should start young and why not, in school?
Saves money in the long run. Need not think too much of what to wear, before school.

More time to sleep in ;0)

When i was at school i hated my Uniform! but now that i am older and more mature I think That School Uniforms are Great for a number of reasons. (1) I agree with the statement that they 'Nip fashion Competition in the bud'. (2) when all Kids see their Peers in the same dress code - it psychologically Unites Everyone and makes them feel good about themselves. (3) Having one set of Clothes to wash during the week is a relief on The Purse-strings Of Parents. (4) On the last Day of our school Career,we had a ritual of 'Autographing' eachothers uniform shirts! writing and sketching silly sayings, messages and drawings. As time has gone by, its funny, nostalgic and sweet to realise what was important / Unimportant to us Kids at that time..!

i think that school uniforms are a good thing and a bad thing. they are good because everyone is considered socially equal, there is no way to distinguish who can afford the 100 dollar sneakers from the person who can't. although they can be a bad thing too because there is no individuality. i have never had to wear a uniform to school, but i have had to wear them for work, and for girl scouts. i don't think there is anything wrong with them, and i actually think that it is a good idea, in other words they look professional and there is nothing to distract you. but what it comes down to is kids will be kids and they will always find something to pick on in another person.

Well, this question certainly brings up people's passion for pretty colored cloth, doesn't it?

First of all, uniforms "do not kill creativity." If you think wearing a uniform is what stunted your creative growth, I feel sorry for you because you've got much deeper issues than what clothes you wear. Honestly, what happens when you go into the work force and have to wear a uniform? Are you any less of a person then? Can we be realistic please, instead of using dead stereotypes and exaggerating?

In theory I think uniforms are a good idea. I get really tired of looking at 13-year-old girl boob and 13-year-old boy *** crack because the kids can't properly dress themselves or keep the clothes on. Also in theory, it would help social classes blend more, as it would not be as obvious who has money and who doesn't. (This wouldn't extend to other items, though, such as designer backpacks.) In theory, it would keep discipline down.

In reality though, it doesn't work in most cases. The kids see this as one more thing to rebel against and take every opportunity to do so. That AGAIN separates kids into groups of who is nerdy enough to actually follow the dress code and who is cool enough to break it and get away with it. It would be yet one more thing for teachers to enforce and with all the other distractions we have to deal with, I really don't see it working out well.

I have two children, both were uniforms to school. At first I was totally opposed to it just because I thought it was a stupid rule. Eventually as time has gone on the only good thing I can see that comes out of it is that I dont have to coordinate their clothes in the mornings!

Uniforms level the playing field. Individuality in other areas creates a more productive, artistic environment. Not only is it easier on the parent, the children are relieved not to have to make that decision. They already have way too much stress.

I am for it. I dont believe unifoarms will stop, slow, or make things like bullying worse. If school have problems with kids mistreating eachother is because of how they are raised and schools cant do much about that.

Besides, I dont feel bullying to to big of a problem anymore. It moe directed twoards drinking and drugs which need to be stoped first.

Heres how it should go: Stop dinking/drugs. Make sure they have all materials for giving best education. Unifoarms.

I think they can bring people togehter. Its an social equalizer (which is how God sees us)(not saying bringing god into school, it just a thougt)
It makes everyone stop as much focus on vanity and where thay got what whcih will in essence better focus on education.

You can still wear unifoarms and have your own personality!!!!

Well I don't know about the US but in the UK most schools have uniforms. I had to wear one, but I didn't see any problems with it. I didn't get bullied about my uniform and I don't know anyone else who was either.

I liked having a uniform because I didn't have to worry about what clothes I should wear and whether they looked good etc etc. You could only buy the uniform from the school so they were all the same. Actually because of that I could only get a HUGE polo shirt so in the summer when it got hot and I took off my jumper it looked like I was wearing a tent, it was that big! And even then I wasn't bullied for it, and trust me when I say I was not the most popular girl in school, not by far.

I think the main reason uniforms weren't an issue was because we had all been brought up in them. They were an everyday thing, totally normal. So I think uniforms are good if kids wear them from the very first school they go to because then it just becomes normal and nobody notices them.
