Basically I find it pretentious when people speak as if they have some kind of magical wisdom. I typically react by beating them at their own game, which is easy because it's ultimately just a game of rhetoric.

Haughtiness & intellectual pretentiousness - such people are almost always laughable poseurs.

i switch off from pretentious people
people who constantly preen themselves, talk only about themselves & put value on people according to their jobs/houses/clothes/cars etc
