What causes a song to be stuck in your head?

Ever heard that one song? The one that you find yourself singing or humming all day unintentially? Or maybe a song that you haven't heard in months or years, and suddenly, one day, it just pops into your head. Sometimes its a song that we can relate to that day or because of something we've been through. Other times it's just a catchy song.. But why would the words and music get stuck in your head? There's a difference between remembering a song and having a song play in your head like a broken tape player, right?

Any other ideas?

i totally know what you mean. sometimes you don't mind the song if it's a good one, but if it's one that you can't stand and it plays over and over in your head, it absolutely sucks!
i'm not really sure why is plays over and over like that, maybe it's just a weird part of your brain...hmmm..you should google it lol

Only knowing the melody and not the words! If I try to think of the correct words, I am doomed, doomed, doomed!!

I think it's a marketing ploy.
If you're shopping and browsing CDs and see an album from an artist whose song you have stuck in your head you'll be more likely to buy the CD or something.
Or maybe it's just the brain trying to entertain itself.

I HATE when I remember a song out of the blue because then I HAVE to go listen to it. >:|

Because it has a catchy, simple, easy to remember/learn chorus.

Well...you must've really liked that song, then XD

I often get songs stuck in my head...in fact, if I could reach into my brain and pull out an iPod, I'd never run out of music XD

It often happens when I know all the lyrics to the song except *one line*, and it keeps replaying in my head until I either figure it out or look it up, and then play the song and sing along to it. Otherwise, it's just a happy little tune that just won't go away until it decides to do so of its own accord.
