The tendency towards possessiveness is hardwired into our brains by means of our ancestors' genes. It has helped generations of people survive, and live at least long enough to have kids with the same characteristics.
How to overcome it? Just be mentally aware of our natural nature of possessiveness, and choose whenever you like to be altruistic. Even altruism seems to have a bit of desire for reward in it!
