They lost the English Civil War (1642-9).
'Humpty Dumpty' was a tower-like contraption used during the siege of one of the Parliamentary strongholds (Worcester, I think) which was intended to allow the Royalist forces to get onto the wall of the town and take it that way. It did not go to plan and Humpty collapsed. Hence the rhyme.
