just give them a smile, if they smiles back..put up some guts to engage in conversation..

Compliment them on something and see how they react, for example if they are known for their sense of humor you can say informally "Your funny" or be a little more forward and say "You have a great sense of humor, that's one of he things I like about you" and see how they respond. If they just respond with a simple "Thanks" at least you've sent them a message that you like them.
