Resolved Question

What do I do when I turn 21? What drinks do I order?

I'm about to turn 21... and yes, I've already been drunk, many a time. But the thing is, I don't know anything about drinks in bars. I recently heard a friend (a waitress) tell a story about someone ordering from her who was clueless about what to order. She was making fun of them, saying she was stammering and asking all of her friends what to order. I am now terrified of being the person that everyone at the table and the waitress makes fun of because I only know of drinks like "Margarita." I want to be confident and know what I'm talking about. I know this is stupid, hah. I mean I've only had drinks I've created.... the goal is to get drunk and make the drink tolerable at college parties... Help me out!! What are some good drinks I should order?

EDIT: love,
the girl who is an alcoholic for being excited about going to bars on her 21st bday :_

I used to get a shot of Black Velvet and a Miller Lite. Sometimes 2 or 3 shots.

There are many mixed drinks that are tolerable, whisky sours, seabreeze, screwdrivers...keep it simple, you don't want to get sick. And have a designated driver!!!! Have fun.

Look on Wikipedia's cocktail list. My personal favorite are Screwdrivers.

You order a Chocolate Martini for the ladies, then ask what the House Special is...

If all else fails, Dr Pepper and Wild Turkey are a wonderful combination...and you will get drunk quite efficiently! LOL

I've been a bartender for almost 10 years, so I know what you mean. I can always tell when people are freshly 21--they only know a few drinks. Unfortunately, among 21 yr olds, Long Islands are a favorite--which inevitably leads to kids getting way too drunk, way too fast (then I have to cut 'em off!). Or, if they're girls, they almost always get a girlie (weak) drink, like a Sex on the Beach or Tequila Sunrise.

First, think of what kind of booze you like (vodka, gin, whiskey, etc). Then think of mixers: Do you like things that are sweet or not, bubbly or not, etc. It's fun to try different things ans see what you like. If in doubt, ask your bartender--we're pretty good at helping with that.
Do you like strong drinks? If you don't, DO NOT order a martini (or a gimlet, or Manhattan). They're all booze (yes, even Cosmos. appletinis and such are an exception, not too strong).

My personal suggestions:
-Beer! There are so many different kinds--explore!
-My favorite summer drink: Stoli Raspberry Vodka and soda water, splash cran, lime garnish. Refreshing and light.
-Fave kitschy drink: White Russian (vodka, Kahlua, Cream). Tastes like chocolate milk. AKA Caucasian (like in the Big Lebowski). Another drink like this is an Iron Butterfly--same as above, sub Bailey's for cream.
-Fave sippin' drink: Jameson Irish Whiskey and Ginger Ale. Simple and good.
-Hangover drink: Bloody Mary (vodka and bloody mix, even better with hot sauce), spicy!
-Night-in drink: Red Wine, a full-bodied one like a Pinot Noir, Chianti, or Shiraz.
-Party at my house drink: Margaritas on the rocks. (2 shots White Tequila (Patron), 1 shot Triple Sec (or Cointreau), 1 shot sour mix (not too much!), big splash of OJ, and juice from 1 freshly squeezed lime. A bit of Gran Marnier on top is a nice touch, so is salt, but both are optional.) So friggin' good...

--Shots. Don't go overboard--they'll sneak up on you. Some faves: Chocolate Cake (Frangelico, lemon vodka, sugar rim); Washington Apple (sweet, but good--lemon vodka OR whiskey, apple schnapps, splash cran--a shot of butterscotch schnapps makes it a caramel apple); Red Headed **** (Jagermeister, peach schnapps, splash cran), Irish Car Bombs (a 1/2 shot of Irish whiskey, 1/2 shot of Baileys, dropped into a Guinness) ******' Awesome (1/4 oz Vodka, 1/4 oz Southern Comfort, 1/4 oz Triple Sec, 1/4 oz Amaretto, 1/4 oz Sour Apple Pucker, Splash of Cran); Oatmeal Cookie (equal parts Goldschlager and Baileys); my personal fave is straight Jameson, though.

Some tips on bar etiquette:
-If you actually want booze in your drink, don't order a frilly drink, like a frozen drink (daiquiri, frozen margarita, colada), an ice cream drink (Grasshopper, Brandy Alexander) or tropical drink (Blue Hawaii, Tropical Itch). Bartenders will assume you don't know how to drink and will make 'em weak. They're all a pain in the *** to make, too. Other drinks bartenders will not be happy to make: Mojito, Old fashioned, or anything frozen.
-ALWAYS tip well and be polite. It's like buying insurance for your drinks.
-Stay away from 21st Birthday shots that are designed to be disgusting, like Cement Mixers and Prairie Fires.
-When ordering a drink, say the booze BEFORE the mixer (like "Malibu and Pineapple"), not the other way around ("Pineapple and Malibu").
-Sometimes it's worth it to get a better liquor--the rail (or house, or well) tequilas, gins, and whiskeys are generally disgusting and cheap. Especially if you're ordering shots--be brand specific. If someone orders a shot of well tequila I assume they're either flat broke or have no taste buds.

Most importantly, HAVE FUN! Be safe, don't get too drunk, and have a wonderful birthday!

-Mojitos
-Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri
-Tequila Sunrise
-Cosmopolitan
-appletini
-Woo Woo
-Pina Colada
-ask the bartender for "Something Bright Bink" (or blue, or green or oragne...)
-point at random bottles and ask for a cocktail with that
-point at a random person and say "what he's having"
-then put on your poker face and say "Vodka Martini.... shaken, not stirred"
-a few shots of tap water to look hard
-7 shots of tequila with salt and lime, then see where u wake up the morning after

..annnd I'm out of ideas

It's really saddening that you have started on the path to alcoholism. Anyone who's more concerned with what drink to order in a bar than anything else involved in becoming 21 as a serious problem.

Is Comprehensive2 serious!? I grew up with alcoholics and am very familiar with alcoholism, and it's pretty offensive to just throw around that term.

Anyhoo, pinkkennel, I'm sure you'll be fine. People honestly don't care as much as you think they do. And it looks like you already got some pretty good replies. Good luck!
