Review the lease carefully before signing it - take it home with you and review it if you want to. If they try to pressure you, it's probably not the right place for you. If there are terms in the lease you do not agree with, you may be able to negotiate.

Free legal service places often give out brochures explaining renters rights and the residential landlord-tenant laws in your state. You should learn about the law in your state before you agree to anything. Some landlords are tricky and will slip clauses into leases that would have you waive certain rights.

Look at court records online to see how often the apartment complex gets sued. It's not necessarily a bad thing if you notice that the complex sues other often because it most likely means that they will follow proper eviction procedure. But if you see them getting sued a lot, that's not a good sign.

Ask around about the reputation of the place before you sign up. Don't prepay for your whole lease in advance as some places will try to get you do by giving you a "discount."

Always get a receipt for your rent and it is best to pay with a check. Keep all receipts along with a copy of your lease in case you need it later.
