I specialize in treating anxiety. Hard to answer in a line or two but I can pass on a few tips:

    1. Understand that anti-anxiety medication will leave you with worse anxiety when you try to come off of it. Paxil (anti-depressant with an anti-anxiety side effect) is an exception to this.

    2. Anxiety is a normal human emotion. The difference between me and someone with an "anxiety disorder" is that they freak out when they experience anxiety. They over-react. They react as though something is terribly wrong. And, of course, this escalates their anxiety while I'm calming myself through mine.

    3. The fears you confront become weaker while you get stronger. The fears you avoid become stronger while you get weaker.

This doesn't cover more than the tip of the iceberg but you may find something useful. There are some good practical calming tips here.

Get in a nice warm bath with some bath oil. Lay back and relax. Afterwards just eat a bit of chocolate and listen to some gentle music.

It depends upon where I am. Eating is effective but has negative results; crying is effective, but only when I'm on my own and not at work; meditating is very effective and can be done pretty much anywhere; going to the gym will help me a lot
