What do you do when you're 19 and have degenerative disc disease and can't take the pain?

I'm only 19 and I've had degenerative disc disease since I was little. At a very young age, I was complaining about the pain in my back. I skipped many school days because I couldn't hack sitting there for so long, and I cried in pain till I was excused to leave on the days I actually did go. my high school education was ruined in the end for I became a dropout. 2 (just 1 at first) of my vertebrae are popping out of my spinal cord at an alarming rate, and the pain has become unbearable over time. I never feel good, or so much as OK, and am always one second away from screaming. Sometimes I just want to blow my brains out because I can't take it anymore. Because of my age, no one I know of will touch me- too young to treat- and they always just write me out a script for ultram or something (which doesn't do crap). What am I suppose to do to receive help? I don't know how much longer I can take this excruciating pain.

I am sorry you are in such pain. I watch my mom with this disease (just one of many) and I wonder sometimes if there is not something more I can find to help her. Keep going back to the doctor. If he(she) is seeing you often my thought is he is going to get tired of seeing you and send you to a specialist. I don't think the chiropractor that unicorn is a bad idea either as they were able to give my mom some relief from her pain. I wish you luck no matter what you decide and if you need to chat feel free to PM me.

Talk to your doctor...also, chiropractic care offers some different holistic approaches....You might want to call a chiropractor in your area....I'm sorry you're in such pain.

Dr Phill....seriously....he'll find a doctor who will treat you and he will help you with the psychological effects and depression which is normal when you have had a long standing illness.

I am 32 and have disc degeneration at the moment I have 6 prolapsed discs, probably due to me having fractured my spine at age 19. I understand the pain I bent to cut my toenails a few weeks ago and could have swore that someone clubbed me with a bat as another disc protruded.

For pain I find that not reaching up above the height of my shoulders nor leaning forward to do things like wash dishes helps as while the pain is not always immediate I always suffer later...

I have been taking soluble aspirin as found it as useful as many other drugs... tramadol at night as find the nausea too much from it in the day... my specialist recently suggested radiofrequency neutronomy that kills nerves on the spine for 6 months at a time...

my specialist also shys away from surgery due to my age and the number of discs affected...
hope you find a solution :)

You need a Beta blocker.....before they took Bextra off the market, I took it daily.....I hear Celebrex is good, talk to your doctor.....

I took Motrin for 15 years because I have a fractured vertebrae and DDD but my liver started having problems so I can't take anything with Ibuprophene for any length of time....consult your doctor....

Glucosamine/Chondroitin in liquid form can be safely ingested in rather large quantities. It rebuilds the material that discs consist of. There's many herbal/supplemental anti-inflamatories that can offer some relief. Please seek out alternative treatments because I've seen them help my husband (certainly much more than prayer). Being 19, you may be much more open and willing to try "weird" radical alternative therapies and finally get relief so you can fully enjoy life. I offer my support.

I also have it. Part of the biggest thing you can do for YOU, is lots of research, finding a good doctor (word of mouth always seemed to work best). I got social security for this. There are people and places that will help you. You have to find them. I learned that years ago. Its hard, for me, now I'm doing better. God Bless and Good luck

Try some pain relief medications. Tramadol is a good one. I know if you go to www.RxOvernight.net they carry several pain relief medications and you don't need a prior prescription or insurance to order. They have online U.S. licensed doctors and pharmacies. I highly recommend this site. Good luck!
