They're just people like anyone else, but with an illness that causes them a lot of distress and can really mess them up, without the right support and treatment.

well I dont much. They are almost NEVER dangerous, usually very quiet in company. Extremly intelligent. Very tough people, have to be. I do not fear folks with this condition. IT IS NOT SOME EVIL CURSE FROM SATAN., they do not, did not, would not choose the disease they have. Id not discriminate against these people.

Well they all vary don't they . So my feelings would be on a case to case basis . They are not defined by their illness .
I find most people with mental illness to be brilliant and I admire the struggle they have , day in day out .
Unfortunately there's so much ignorance regarding the illness .

Thank you, so true. It is not like any other illness, it's totally misunderstood.

It's a chemical imbalance in the brain; not much can be done about it. Knew two fellows who had it.

One realized that the voices in his head were nonsense, moved to a very small town because he realized the illness was affecting his behavior and the best way to stay out of trouble was to live in a community where everybody knew each other. He did odd jobs and took care of his disabled father. Clinically he had a major mental illness, but also--in a way--one of the sanest people around.

The other, despite being brighter academically, decided to buy in to the disease. It was mainly a matter of wanting to believe that the disorder had given him something instead of taking away his educational plans, his career, etc. So although he acknowledged that he had a diagnosis and he sometimes wanted the voices to "get out of my head," he also did things that worsened the symptoms and usually claimed that gave him some sort of power. Sad outcome--he ended up assaulting someone and got into trouble with the law. The standard for an insanity defense is very stringent: he ran away from the scene after the assault, so in the eyes of the law he understood that what he had done was wrong. The police picked him up in about an hour and instead of getting treatment at a hospital he went into the general inmate population.

    Most schizophrenics aren't violent, btw.

I could make a dozen jokes, but it's a ******* serious illness that harms thousands of people and their families - absolutely tragic, I feel for everyone concerned.

Schizophrenics are my favorite. I have worked with the chronically mentally ill for many years. Some of my favorite people re schizophrenics. There is a little bit of that in all of us.

i lost a dear friend to schizophrenia. i don't mean she died, i mean she isn't there anymore. we had been best friends for 15 years when she decided to quit her meds. i was very angry with her for the first 2 years. she used to be responsible and capable and great company, and now she is a useless flake. i had to let go. sad.

Those two years you very angry would have been the time she most needed a friend.

Well I am one... O.o and it is not that bad. Mine is very subtle. But when I have anxiety I have visions. One time I was up all night in my room talking to my teacher until I realized she was not real. I also thought that there were rats crawling all over my bed, I had to leave the room.

Many are mis-diagnosed,because the medical world along with the majority of people are unaware of the advances in technology,or do not credit it as true. This situation has now become untenable, with advertising now using exactly the technology available to put thoughts in whoever they choose, into their head. Its a type of artificial telepathy. When you have finished laughing(probably)enter "voice to skull" or V2K into search. What you will see there is true beyond doubt.

I had to sit and watch many psych patients (at work), but I don't ever recall having a "true" schizophrenic. Like most psych disorders, it would be interesting to see.
