I read that the phrase "spit and polish" and "elbow grease" originated in the British Army a couple o hundred years ago.

The Sergeants were always emanding that their men mae verything clean, shoes and boots needed to be polished to a high gloss, buckeles shined, belts sparkling etc.

At some satge the troops realised that if they spat on the ob<x>ject and then polished it - the quality of the shine was better and the polishing time reduced. That idea is still in place, but instead of spitting on things they dip ther polishing rag into water now.

Elbow grease originated in the engineering regiment, where you used grease to make machines work better and faster. THe troops were advised to use elbow grease (ie work harder) to improve the quality of their tasks.
