Making up lies, will just end up making you a fool. You'd be a fool to cheat on your spouse, eventually you'll get caught. In either situation; you're a fool

Making up lies about a fake relationship sounds totally pointless and could never be as bad as actually cheating, because nothing has actually happened.

Cheating. Violating the social contract you have with one another through physical and/or emotional means should be a deal-breaker. Lies are just words, though the intentions are very wrong, and one must consider if you want someone like that as a partner. They would make me think, but not immediately leave like cheating would.
