Recipe for being popular where I went to high school
1. be in a sport, and the more sports you are in the better. If you are a girl be in a slutty sport like volleyball or cheerleading. If you are a guy be in a traditional sport like football or basketball.
2. be selective about who you are friends with. And I mean really selective. Don't even sit with anyone else at lunch or hold a conversation with anyone else. you have to know how to gossip, create rumors, and use humor to ridicule and humiliate others. Also, know how to get everyone on your side and believing you in order to manipulate and control to set up situations to make everyone in the whole school including teachers believe something untrue about someone else and then ruin their lives with this blackmail and sabotage.
3. go to drinking parties and have sex but make sure you look like an angel in front of everyone lest they tell teachers or your parents
4. Get straight A's. Also, kiss *** to authorities and be a perfect angel in front of them, and then get away with murder.
5. Have lots of expensive things and also permissive parents--particularly the kind who would bail you out of any situation and use threats/bribes/blackmail in order to make exceptions for you.
6. Subscribe to every trend and preferably start trends which involve inside jokes.
7. create inside rules in your clique no one else knows about so you all conform to the clique yet no one else knows how to conform to it thus blocking anyone not in the group from ever entering.

Sports. Just like it has always been since the beginning of the 20th century. The age the Jocks were born and they preyed on the geeks.

I hung out with the 'Rocker's'!
As for the in crowd and their outstanding personalities, I think they covered up their personalities, with designer clothes,.....etc.

high school popularity is all about the tease.
all the girls that were popular in my school were tarts and didnt have 2 brain cells to rub together, i feel bad for them when they finish school and realise they cant get what they want by twirling their hair and batting their eyelashes

Actually, I think it has more to do with material things & the way you look. People in sports are just admired for their sportsmanship, their athletic ability... things that people would like to have. But, I also feel like people with 'outstanding personalities' can be popular too.. I mean, when I was in high school- kids that had a great sense of humour were well-liked as well

Genetics primarily. That would also account for most legacy popularity (kids popular because their parents or older siblings were popular).

We are born to be popular, or to be the butt of ridicule, or, for most of us, to be somewhere in between.

My school was too small for popularity to be anything worth bragging about.

Thank God the social rules of high school don't apply to real life. :-)

In my HS the popular kids either had money, long standing family ties in the community or where fantastic athletes. There were a few who hit the trifecta.

how very, very sad. teaching kids young to BUY popularity, with either $, parents' power in the community, or both. and its been going on since forever and applauded by nearly all since forever. some very brave kids never BUY into that shameful crap, because they have true, pure integrity. that must be why popular kids then have to turn to torture. so sad, so pathetic.

Slutty clothes, sucking up to people and being fake.... is what made people popular in high school. Of course, there are some exceptions.

I didn't like the atmosphere in that place.

Now are you talking about people that were ACTUALLY popular in that everyone genuinely liked them, or those people that everyone SAID they liked and migrated to, but actually were secretly hated beyond all measure by everyone around them?

hmm, nah i think it's a bunch of the same kind of preppy kids, and since they have the most obnoxious personalites and most populated group, they seem like the "popular kids"

Ppl are popular for different reasons. Some had outstanding personaliies but others were popular for being great in sports, grades, some were just so good looking, others were full of wit. Some were popular for being so well dresses, a cut above the rest, some for their friendliness and caring. Some were just outrageous and so funny. Seems people were popular because they had something that set them apart from the crowd. There were so many popular ppl where I went to school and even now, years out of school.
