They are being abused or mistreated.
They are just unhappy in general and see no other option.

They fall into two broad camps. There are many young girls escaping from abuse of one kind or another on the one hand. While on the other there are young women so convinced that they are grown that they will not accept any limits on their behaviour. This second group put their parents through hell, but generally speaking never see their error until they have $crewed up monumentally or until they have teenage girls of their own. It's not universal, so don't shoot the messenger ladies, but some of you have "territory" issues that don't resolve easily. It was this group that the Chinese had in mind when they created the saying "Two women under one roof brings trouble." (And that is real. I didn't just dream it up.)

Teenage years are a very difficult and confusing time, but luckily it is only temporary. Teenagers are full of hormones, lack communication skills, are becoming aware of adult issues (and as a result believe themselves to be wise), are expected to be more responsible, naturally need to assert themselves in order to grow emotionally and scientifically speaking are producing new connections in their brains and loosing those connections that they feel are unimportant, as well as having the least amount of fear that they will have in their lives. This cocktail of changes/issues make them very vunerable. Teenagers might have a number of reasons why they run away but the main ones are that they are suffering from abuse, that they feel like no one is listening to them or supporting them with their very real problems or that they are pushing for greater independence. When you are a parent of someone who has run away, you need to firstly find out why this has happened without being angry. As hard as it might seem you need to be supporting, caring and able to discuss issues calmly with your child. You need to ask why this has happened and what you can do as a family to resolve it. This might take some time and be frustrating but if you love your child you will be willing to go through this. The most important thing is to make sure that you have good communication skills yourself or if you do not, you need to seek family counselling. It is very important not to 'brush it all under the carpet' and hope it won't happen again. The act of running away is a sign that all is not well. Your relationship with your child will always be strained if you do not do this.

two reasons:
1. they run towards someone...boyfriend, school, fredom, love, etc...
2. they run away from someone: family, father, mother, abuse, drugs, bullies.etc.

i don't know. hormones, maybe? teenage years are a messed up time. all your problems seem bigger than they really are and it doesn't seem like they'll ever end.

I'm seventeen and i still live at home. But i am very much looking forward to me and my friend moving and getting our own place. It's different for everyone! The reason i'm looking forward to leaving is because my family really couldn't care less about me (and NO i'm not being a dramatic self centred over exaggerating teenage emo girl, those people really **** me off!) But i have a friend who really does care about me and i care about her, and i could live with someone that we like each other, that would be better than to live with people who don't? Yes?
