probably more crimes, famine, and sickness. I think religion deters bad behavior even though it also causes bad behavior.

about the same. it is not about the institution, but about how people are and how their tendencies are. good people would continue doing good deeds, evil people would find another excuse to do evil deeds.

No dark ages. No inquistion. No crusades. No jihads. All in all the world would probably be far far more peaceful and probably far more technologically advanced.

:D ..... If only but people need something to follow and believe in, does not mean I think less of those that need this sort of structure but with that said there would just be something else to take its place.

It is amazing to me how many people have such different opinons. based on what I have read and what I understand there has always been some form of religion. The problem is, religion is simply beliefs and worship; people's beliefs and opinions concerning the existence, nature, and worship of a deity or deities, and divine involvement in the universe and human life; an institutionalized or personal system of beliefs and practices relating to the divine. There have been religions that worship the Sun, the moon, the earth, religions that worship sex, individuals and even Satan himself. So when you say religion, you are covering a broad and vast area. If you refer to Christian religion then you are making reference to Jesus Christ and the Bible. The question for everyone is, what does your religion represent, how real is it, how strong is your faith. If you abide by it will it bring you peace, will it influnence peace in society, in the world, does it offer eternity for your soul? There are lots of religions but only one way to an eternal life for one's soul and that is belief and faith in the Bible, that it is the divine word of God, that Jesus was and is the Son of God and he alone suffered and died for your sins, arose from the dead and has the power to forgive you of your sins. There are many faiths, there are many religions so it can certainly be confusing. While I admit I am not one who lives at the foot of the cross, I do believe the Christian teaching and beliefs, (religion) if that is what you want to call it, is the only one of which I could accept as meaningful and worthwhile and it has contributed goodwill and hope to the world, without it this world would be much worse than it is today.

Really? You honestly believe there would be less conflict if there were no religious faith? Do you have siblings? Have you ever seen the girls fight over a guy? Have you ever seen guys fight over a girl? If you look more closely, you will realize that the so-called "religious conflicts," are really about territory, resources, money and power. While the battle in Ireland, for example, was allegedly between Catholics and Protestants, in truth, it was about the relationship with England and who would control the destiny of the Irish people. John Lennon's song "imagine" is extraordinarily well scored but the ideas within it are utterly unattainable and probably not even desirable. Unity among human beings is and has only been possible for relatively brief periods of time because we have our own wants, needs, and desires. There are some who use religion to get what they want. That is not the fault of religion, anymore than death by firearm is the fault of the gun. It is a matter of the weapon of choice. To blame religion for the conflict in the world is to be intellectually lazy and to live in a state of denial about the nature of human beings. In terms of logical argument the statement "if there was no religion, there would be no reason for conflict" is a flawed argument because the absence of religion is neither necessary nor sufficient to the elimination of conflict. Even if there was only one person on the face of the earth, there would still be conflict. Consider the arguments you have within yourself when making decisions.

Can not possibly imagine. I depend mostly of God and prayer and so many have been answered over the years.

I think that there would be a whole lot of people who felt very lost. Faith is central in many peoples lives and can inspire them to do wonderful things. Religion is the institutionalized version of faith and has been the cause of so much anger, and violence that questions like yours come up for more and more people. It's a thought-provoking question.

I think something would be missing from society and that people would create another institution to fill the void.

I don't beleive that abolishing religion would take away belief from the faithful or the need for belief from the searching and lost.

Or are you asking what it may have been like if religion(s) never existed?

Nice. But of course we have to consider any cult as a religious enterprise, in North Korea, the leaders are worshipped as gods.

Scientist? Scientists are not to be worshipped. They work at revealing partial truths, they don't expect them to come to them magically.
