I believe that love is an attraction.
For living creatures, it's not limited by gender, age, species, variety, or intensity. For instance, I love my best friend. He has always been cool with me. I wouldn't have his babies, but that doesn't mean I don't love the person that he is. Obviously, I would love a partner in a different way. Sexuality is a material need, for we'd have no need for it if we did not live this existence, but it is closely tied to it. Most likely, the fact that to procreate two people usually feel very close, and that it in itself is an emotionally binding experience, lead to a correlation between love and sex.
Whether or not people admit it, one CAN love more than one partner, I believe. In a perfect world we would all have the ability to all be partners IF we chose to be. We are usually limited, however, to just one partner, because of other materialistic and animalistic natures that stand in the way, mainly jealousy and the desire to have someone to yourself. It's understandable, and most of us have learned to live with this over the generations, and have accepted a one on one relationship to be the standard.
I believe that love is similar to gravity, magnetism, and atomic attraction, however it attracts in a spiritual sense, which is where true reality lies. It holds the universe together in ways that most of us can, at the very best, barely comprehend. It binds us as a species, and as a piece of the universe.
I personally believe that if we take away our preconceived notions of what the universe is, and we consider the possibility that the atoms, stars, planets, life forms and galaxies could all come together to form consciousness itself, then one can see how God could be all around us, we could be a part of him, and him a part of us; Not as a floating man in the sky, but as a consciousness so vast and complex that we can't begin to comprehend it. Perhaps that God is the universe itself. Again, forget what you think of as physical, metaphysical, and spiritual. What if it's all the same? Scientists are still looking for that one law of nature that controls everything: the "singularity". Perhaps that is consciousness itself...
...and the force that binds that consciousness is love.

Giving all without calculation.
Attracting all without discrimination.
Forgiving and forgetting all with no interruption.
Detaching all except the One True God.

Ayn Rand says it's a mixture of pride and admiration and I can see what she means.
Whenever I look at my husband or think of our unborn child I feel a whole lot of pride and admiration for both. It's an elated feeling, but I don't think it completes the definition of love.

I view love as the ultimate rebellion. Love is Rebellion. Society teaches us at a very young age that it's not okay to love ourselves, we can't touch other people. We must keep our hands to ourselves. We must obey without thinking. Obligation over doing what makes one happy is the hallmark of a true adult. Happiness is okay, as long as the things that make you happy have society's stamp of approval.

And when you truly love someone or something with all of your being. Everything in you rebels against this compulsion to obey, compulsion to conform. You rebel against obligation and approval. The only thing that matters is the lover and the beloved. The pursued and pursuing...

Love is Patient, Love is Kind

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves."
