Canada Day actually.
It's our independence day. When Queen Victoria signed the papers for the British North America Act which granted Canada the FIRST independent Parliament in the Empire. A parliament which did not require acceptance of the Queen for any laws it decided to create. Essentially she granted independence. The Dominion of Canada was founded on July 1, 1867. This act came about after recognizing the significant likelihood that the American influence in the Dominion was going to cause western territories to joing that union instead of staying in the Empire. The creation of the first true transcontinental railway was the foundational part of the deal that brokered the BNA Act. All provinces and territories would be linked and bound by economic ties as well as political history.
