What does' girt by sea mean'?

This is part of my national anthem(Australia) I've googled and looked in the dictionary but cant find a concrete definition for girt.

    Girt means surround. So.. "Surrounded by sea"

    I hate our anthem.

    Surrounded as in we are an island.
    As for our anthem it is ours and you can not go changing it just because it is old. It has history :)

    Blowed if I know. I'm still trying to work out how we all got Ostriches.
    (Its actually a contraction of "girdled" an old word for surrounded.)
    But I'd sooner have "I am Australian " as the anthem. Much more apropriate in my book.
