What does Independence day really mean to you?

Is it just hot dogs, fireworks and a day off? As a veteran myself....I would like to thank my dad and his generation for confronting the evil of the Second World War. War sucks, and I have been ashamed of my country at times, however I have several friends who have payed the ultimate price, for me to be free to celebrate July 4th.....may they rest in Peace and "Thank You."

i'm also a veteran, and i've been in battle for my country. i've been around the world, and the people who badmouth this country should be grateful they live here. there are countries in the world where they imprison or kill you for badmouthing the country or its leaders. america is the greatest country in the world, and if you don't like it, you're free to leave. this is not the case in many countries. independence day is a day to be grateful to be an american to me.

It doesn't mean that much to me, because I don't live in America.
But I went to a friend's wedding today and it was lovely!

A LOT of people sacrificed to help this great country begin, I liked the study of US history. Independence Day reminds me of this fact.

The sacrifice goes on, I just read a posting by a young wife and mom getting ready to endure her first deployment as her husband serves.

I am truly grateful for the sacrifices made so that we all can enjoy our lives.

It's not only my mother's birthday, but it is the day that represents my freedom and the men who lived and died fighting for it! It also represents the men and women who are oversees fighting for us again. I would sure hope that it is not just another day for us Americans. Those who feel that way do not deserve to live in a country where people would die to keep them safe.

Nothing. This is not the country I joined the military to serve and to protect its Constitution. The Constitution means nothing since the Bush II administration.

It's not a country anymore, it's a corporation, and a greedy one at that.

Just people waving plastic American flags made in China while they watch fireworks from a safe distance thinking about how America is the bestest country in the world before they gather their little kids into their Toyota and drive back home to their little lot in a development just far enough enough outside the city to be safe from the blacks and mexicans and...culture.

Oh and also layered jello.
