    For me, this lyric has a specifically Canadian reference. Throughout the sixties, US B52 bombers with nuclear weapons were always in the air over Canada on "airborne alert duty". This was done so the bombers were already in the air and ready to attack the USSR if the US was attacked by Soviet missiles. Many Canadians could see the vapour trails of these machines as they flew north to Russia. Hence the phrase "riding shotgun in the sky" A glorious lyric.
