What does it mean if you message a guy "Hey :), what's up? " and all he says in reply is "hey"
is this some non rude acknowledgement that he doesn't want to talk to me?
what do I do if he just says "hey" .... there is not point in hey... just not answering my greeting question which i previously stated :(

If you are a girl, it could mean a lot. But if you are a guy, you understand that the guy is drowsy but has still been courteous enough to send you his last message of the day.

It could be he's not a big talker or he's in the middle of 6 other online conversations.
Don't be discouraged by this alone. "What's Up" is pretty casual. "What are you doing?" or "What are your plans for the day/weekend?" is much more likely to get a real response.Like (1)

He's probably like you, doesn't know what to say, and you didn't give him anything to work with. You girls expect a huge novel from a guy if he sends you the first message, but don't think you have to do the same, atleast say something to spark some conversation, we aren't gods.

That could just be his way of responding; some guys aren't big on texting, and if he's preoccupied with something else, he's not going to get into a big conversation then and there. Perhaps he likes you and wants you to make the first big move. And maybe he's cute, but doesn't have much substance in other regards. But assuming that isn't the case, the ball is in his court to get back to you at some point. You made the initial contact with him; if he's interested, he'll respond back later with something more than just 'hey'. And some guys are a little clueless about communicating with women, so if he responds, give him a chance to prove himself.

What you said could just be a greeting, he's just acknowledging you. If you want him to answer just say "so, what's up?".
