One's deepest identification is what he/she lives for and is willing to die for, the absence of which would render life unlivable.
But I don't agree with the quote myself, because people identify what is their spirit versus what is the human ego's concoction of beliefs, rituals, myths, expectations and emotional demands of him/herself and others, and indoctrination into religion.
This misidentification is what creates much of the suffering in this world.
