I had a tendency to go that way in each of five depression, attempted it once, and did a great deal of planning for another. I have overcome it now, in such a way that I feel certain the urge will never return.
It started with a core belief that death is peace and non-existence.
It became attractive when my emotional pain became persistent to the point of seeing no possibility of recovery.
I believed myself to be useless and a failure.
I believed no one would miss me, and that my absence would make no difference to anyone or anything.
I believed myself incapable of changing any of this for the better.
Those who know me here, or who have read my posts might be surprised, or have questions.
Happy to answer them from profile page.
Depression starts with negative thoughts and reactions to stressful events, but these negative thoughts create their own stress reactions which lead in a downward spiral.
The thoughts trigger stress hormones, neurotransmitters into the body and mind. When chronic it changes the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, lowering levels of hormones responsible for happiness such as seratonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and testosterone. The whole being is affected.
At this point clinical depression has set in. This is exceptionally difficult to shift without professional assistance in most cases. The mind cannot think clearly, is confused, has greater difficulty finding solutions to problems. The negative view of things is perceived as 100% real and valid. It becomes exceptionally easy under these circumstances to see death as the only option.

Well my understanding is that most (if not all ) people who commit or attempt suicide have in common the fact that they are depressed . WHY they are depressed varies from person to person. A lot of people attempt suicide because they are in emotional pain and suicide seems like the only way to escape this pain.
