You can still have the good old days if you want....but it has to start at home. Hey, I remember uttering that exact phrase lol...now it's "shut the **** up, or I'll kick your a$$"....as silly as the first one sounds, let's bring back those good ole days. :-)

I agree, I can make "good days", for me personnally there was a softer time, and more peaceful time in my life when our communications were less toxic. Yes no 4 letter words in our house except "Love".

Awww that's a good word :-) The rule in our house is no swearing unless it's for a REALY good reason. Like something heavy drops on your head and it really hurt..lol. No swearing at each other, but perfectly acceptable and within reason if you need to outside of the house. I grew up with parents that swore ALL the time, and they also verbally abused each other, so for me, it's none of that stuff in my house. Plus swearing all the time makes you look unintelligent.

two things: reality TV and the internet.
Both of those sources offer easy access to the dregs of society

Talk about a walk through memory lane:

Up your nose with a rubber hose
Twice as far with a chocolate bar
In your ear with a can of beer
Up your butt with a coconut

My mom always said that each generation gets a little worse. She was a smart woman.

Kids today are raised more in a speak-easy environment at home and school - anything sadly goes.

I never, and I mean never, heard my parents use the F word. Not many kids in my school did either. I don't remember at what age it was when that word was everywhere, but I think it was the 90s. Everyone I knew started slinging that word around.

I came out of the midwest to california, this was the late 70s, by the 80s I thought all the kids in my school were ex-saliors, it did not compute with me and still doesn't. Saddly I picked up a few words along the way that I struggle at times to give up. I just feel really bad for the kids.

I am of the opinion the good ol days never really existed anywhere except in the imagination of the elderly. I suppose every generation likes to believe things were more wholesome and that the world was less cruel and scary and violent when they were younger...but it's simply not true. People still cursed and committed crimes and such in the 1950s just like they do today. Sure fads have changed. We don't wear poddle skirts or tie dye t shirts or bell bottoms anymore(uh, not much anyway) but IMO the world is no worse than it was decades ago. People just like to complain. The older one gets the more annoying younger people are to them because it reminds them of their own mortality. My parents never cussed around me. Kids today are no worse or better than me and my peers were when we were growing up in the 80s/90s. My kid's and grandkids generations won't be any worse or better either, but I will perceive that they are worse most likely since it seems everyone does make that switch once they hit middle age and older

I guess we all have a different life experience. For me I can see how I can insulate my kids from various things, my sense is to make sure they can be kids and don't have to grow up or be affected by foul things until they have to.

Speaking as one of the "elderly"--I'm 55--I can tell you things are much worse, and because of my age I am speaking from personal experience. What happens today did happen when I was young, but not on the scale they do today. A foul-mouthed kid in the 60's and even the 70's was rare. I don't think those days were better, but when it comes to kids swearing, those really were the good ol' days. I will teach you a phrase you can use when you "make that switch" once you hit middle age: I have been your age, but you have never been mine. Please don't write off what older people say. They have lived it.

I don't know...seems to me that that expression was closely followed by, "Up your A, with a piece of glass."
I think there were good kids who said one thing, and rougher kids who said the other.
Though, it's true...the language has become more foul, not fair. There was a time when you would almost never hear or see the "f" word. Now look around. Kids only follow what adults do.
Really, I sometimes wonder if there will be any "good old days" for today's kids to remember.
