An emotional affair is where you become 'super duper best friends' with someone to the point where your spouse can reasonably become or feel excluded. Usually lots of emotional intimacy, sharing of secrets and whatnot which may not happen with your spouse. Just like regular cheating, some people are fine with it, but many aren't.

When you speak with someone about the things you should be speaking to your spouse about.

I know others have good friends, I don't mean that because people speak with their friends about a lot.

Let's say you spoke with your spouse/partner about things and now you no longer do because you are now doing this with someone else for whatever reason.

The same as physically cheating but entices emotional damage from circumstances, either way...cheating of any kind of dishonest, morbid, soul damaging and immorally and inhumanely wrong.
