What have you been told about "bless you"?

I was once told that you say "bless you" to someone when they sneeze because that's when it's the easiest for 'bad spirits' to get into your body.

But i just do it out of politeness. What have you been told?

the heart momentarily stops during a sneeze and saying "bless you" welcomes the person back to life.

The french have a great system. They say different things depending on how often the person sneezes:

First sneeze: à tes souhaits! (the general "Bless you!" (lit.) to your wishes!)

Second sneeze: à tes amours! (to your loves!)

Third sneeze: à tes aïeux ! (to your ancestors!)

Fourth sneeze: crève ! (die! or choke!)

I dont know about you but I love it ^^

I heard it was to stop you sneezing out your soul too. I admit though that I'm terribly rude and never say it, I find it a bit weird.

It's actually said to have started during the papacy of Pope Gregory the great between 540 and 604 AD. During the times of the plagues if someone sneezed it was a short blessing to Ward off the Plague. Sideline.. Pope Gregory the Great was also the one responsible for bringing us Gregorian Chants. However It had also been a belief that the soul COULD escape the body while sneezing, but the plague is actually when "Bless you" came to be traditional when someone sneezes.. I do a lot of research when I'm bored lol

I heard the plague thing too but with my kids I usually just copy them with a "choo" and they giggle. I don't bless anyone ever just don't see a point to it. My sister cracks me up though as she always says "health" as if the sneeze is the oncoming of a cold and she's trying to counter act it.

I think the ending of the french one is cute though... by the forth one I generally tell someone "stop, quota filled".
