Like everyone else is saying, instrumental jazz or classical music. I find vocals distracting.

Definatly classical. I am a traditional rocker chick but when it comes to critical thinking, hard projects and art it actual improves the results. It is a Scientific proven fact and it has worked for me too. It also lowers blood pressure.

Ambient, repetitive material.

Whether that's a downtempo jazz number, or Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music," the less there is happening-- even at very different volumes like the two I mention-- the more you can get into what it is you're doing.

Ambient.

Dan Pound is pretty good.

Listen to "Feeding the Moon". It's about a quarter of the way down on the page.

I agree with Euph0ria and StudentOfUnifyingLife! I want to also add classical music (I'm not an avid listener of classical music but I have heard samples of classical music that are used in stimulating thinking. Well they're suppose to stimulate thinking. I'm not sure if it actually works.

I have to agree with Shellfinder - Classical is a proven stimulator and I use that often when I counsel with people and self meditation.

Classical music, hands down, but I also go for trance, electro, house, and hardstyle.

And thennnnn.... I also listen to Elton John because his lyrics are poetically moving.

Research in the past found that Baroque music with a strong 4 beat can be very beneficial. Bach, Vivaldi, Corelli are the ones I prefer and remember the names. The Pachelbel Canaon is the best example, I love it. Vivaldi's Four Seasons. The instrument doesn't matter, Vivaldi wrote for just about every instrument (guitar, violin, flute, etc.) It is really calming and helpful.

Well Mantras work much better especially if your intent is to concentrate on whatever, it's a form of meditation... It allows you to reach your subconscious where really we have all the answers if we want them... it works great for me and my clients.. you kind find mantra music in spiritual shops or even your local Walmart... Diva Prima , wonderful Sankara's they create such an atmosphere that ,,, no matter what your trying to resolve or not are awesome she has a beautiful voice... and the instrumentals is excellent..
