I think its synonymous with patriotism.
I think its stupid just because once you tie yourself emotionally to your country you have to feel bad when people from your country or your government does stupid things and that will happen inevitably.

At best a misguided yet harmless wet-eyed , **** - eyed view or sentiment to your own identity in relation to the place and culture within which you live. It sometimes is accompanied by an appoligist attitude to the wrong doings of it's nations institutions and is closely associated with a conservative outlook.
At worst. Fascism.
