What is that sensation felt in the chest and stonmach when nervous?

when I think about the next martial art class I get this sensation in my stomach and in my chest..... its hard to describe its like the "butterflies" feeling except much more intense.

Just thinking about what my Sifu told me,that I need to be more confident, not second guess myself and just try makes that sensation come even if I just think about it or the past class...perhaps its nervs if so what can I do to make that feeling go away?

this sensation also if I give in to it makes me freeze up.

Yes, it's definitely anxiety. It could be related to performance anxiety, where someone is scared of underperforming or of criticism from others. The feeling is caused by your stomach temporarily shutting down (I think.)

I agree wholeheartedly with Lacey. Other things you could do are:

see your Sifu or other students as people there to help and support you rather than to judge you.
Know that you are human and will make mistakes. EVERYONE makes mistakes, so it's okay. You might be a bit too harsh on yourself. You will learn from them and can only improve :)
One way you can become more confident in your routines is by practising a lot (I'm not sure how much you practise - these are only suggestions.) This way, you will know that you are performing to the best of your ability and will not feel the need to second guess yourself because the moves will become natural and "programmed" into your mind and body.

Have fun and good luck!

The sensation is caused by your Solar Plexus energy centre (chakra) contracting; and this is immediately passed on to your nervous system and starts the physical processes of chemicals etc. that take place when your chakra contracts.

The chakra is controllable to a greater or lesser extent by your thoughts, feelings and beliefs; so if you can organise things so that you do not have this fear reaction, the chakra won't contract in that circumstance. Support from others can have that effect - as mentoned above.
